December 2000 Fishing Field Day:- Perth metro, including Swan River.

Well Friday brought wonderful weather, with sunshine and little wind and I'm sure we were all hoping it would remain that way for the local field day weekend. I was fishing with one of my regular fishing partners (Chas) and we decided to fish the Two Rocks area with Lou and Keith. We tried to find a suitable spot to fish, but in the end we had settled on the inner parts of the marina. Surprisingly, we caught a wide range of species, including wrasse, whiting, skippy and small tarwhine.

After a while we realised the chance of us getting something decent was slim, so we headed off to "the spot". Upon arrival we realised that we couldn't drive onto the beach and things looked very rough and churned up. We ended up trying our luck at Club Capricorn groyne where we proceeded to haul in great lumps of weed on most casts. We left and then went on to have a look at Pippidinny. Chas and I decided to head back to Perth, while Keith and Lou stayed.

After a quick stop at Chas' we headed to Hillarys marina to try and catch a shark or two (some very good friends of mine regularly catch small bronzies and reef sharks off the walls). Arriving at our chosen spot, we were met with the sight of heaps of people trying to seek shelter from the wind and swell. The tailor had been plentiful, and 4 days before field day my mates had landed heaps of tailor, herring and pike (most released), as well as sharks of 20kg and 40kg. Well Murphy's Law dictates that the days I go fishing, the fish decide to hang around other spots and Saturday night was no different. Although we caught a couple of pike and smaller tailor, the fishing was slow and we decided to call it a night at 12.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

We decided to sleep in a little bit the next morning and as a result we got down to the river around 7am. We first headed to the traffic bridge area, but the fish certainly weren't there, so we headed to one of my favourite flathead and tailor spots. The fish weren't there either, so we called it a morning and went home for lunch. After a bit to eat we headed to Hillarys again where I caught a herring within the first few casts.

Things were looking good as it was mid afternoon. The herring came on the bite for about 15 minutes with anglers fishing with wogs (maggots) as bait, cleaning up. Chas being the keen angler he is made the quick drive to the tackle shop to get some (we were using prawns!). By the time he got back they had left and we were left with one herring in the bag. We left disappointed.

After the weigh-in we held a night cast and BBQ. This is a really enjoyable evening and everyone who attended certainly enjoyed themselves.

Mat Sneddon, Assistant Field Day Officer.

It should be noted that many members are now choosing to fish for the sport and not the competition. These members are following the catch and release ethic, and although they choose not to weigh in, it doesn't mean they are not catching plenty of fish. New competition rules in 2001/2002 will allow them to catch and release and still get field day points.

Field Day Prizes.

Heaviest Scale Fish Tony D'Alonzo 1.25 kg Tailor
Heaviest Bag of Scale Fish Tony D'Alonzo 7.7 kg
