Open Fishing Field Day - December 2002.

An open field day means that you could fish anywhere, even in your backyard, providing it backed onto Western Australian tidal waters.

It was great to see more people turn up for the Christmas BBQ and night cast at George's place after the weigh in. The casting was an absolute hoot, the only problem was that it didn't last long enough. The idea was that you cast to the dimly lit target with the aid of a glow stick, which ranged in size from Derry's glow worm to Chas's traffic direction device.

The casting was conducted mostly in good humour apart from one or two startled reactions to the results that our eminent scorer relayed back to the recorder. Peter Stoeckel showed us all how it was done, taking out the honours for the night. Which raises the question; maybe dry casting with one's eyes closed might be the way to go. Now to the fishing.

The Club owns an air conditioned holiday house at Kalbarri which is available for rent to the public and club members at competitive rates

Bob led a group to Penguin Island and even though the catch was small, an enjoyable time was had by all. All weighed in except Bob who tried to tell us that his splendid catch of yellow fin whiting was prized from his grasp by his lady guests.

Terry Fuller fished "somewhere south of the metro area" and his 30 fish consisted of herring and skippy. (Actually the catch was shared from both Penguin Island on Saturday and Hillarys on Sunday morning - no secret TF)

Vix and I fished the beach a few kms south of Wedge Island. Between us we landed a few good tailor, some good size herring and a shark. The beach was magnificent, the water turquoise and the wind gentle, what a way to spend a weekend. The lunatic element however were out in full force, with motor bikes and 4 wheel drive being driven at high speed along the beach all day. It's little wonder that we are faced with restricted access to parts of our coast.

The highlight of the weigh in was Tony's bag. Wago is apparently one of Tony's favorite fishing spots and one can understand why.

There were big tailor, good size skippy as well as pink snapper and a host of minor species. A remarkable effort.

Looking forward to the next field day which is the Mandurah 500, should be a great weekend with good prizes on offer.

Hope to see you on the beach next time. Malcolm Harris, Field Day Officer.
